The State and Local Tax Accountant is responsible for preparing and reporting tax filings at the state and local level, including sales and use taxes; property taxes; as well as federal/state excise taxes as needed. During this time, the Staff needs to focus on developing skills, building their technical skill base, understanding and executing diligent client service, and getting oriented to the Firm’s practices, policies, and culture. Work is performed under close supervision. Responsibilities increase with demonstrated skill.
Prepare state and local tax returns: Sales/Use, Property Tax, and Income/Franchise/Gross Receipt
Research and consult on various state and local tax matters, such as: analysis of client nexus / filing obligations, service and product specific sales tax research, and state conformity to federal income tax code.
Prepare responses to inquiries from tax authorities, including participation
Work closely with managers and partners to promptly resolve client matters or tax issues
Maintain awareness of industry trends and governmental regulations
Execute on special filings – e.g. amended returns for refunds, past due returns for voluntary disclosures – based on opportunities identified by the practice leader
Communicates with various state agencies regarding the collection, payment and reporting of these taxes, including working with government auditors to provide information and mange tax audit process.
Works with others in tax department to ensure accuracy of filings and compliance with multiple timetables and daily deadlines for multiple companies
